BTC works just fine?

Genuine question, I wanna understand

I recently moved my BTC from an exchange to my wallet and paid like $0.85USD in gas fees. It's a native segwit wallet.

I keep seeing that fees just make the network unusable but it worked just fine to me.

I own both BTC and BCH. Not a maxi.
