Does crypto need merchant adoption or just compatibility with payment rails merchants already use?

Maybe merchants don’t need to “accept crypto” at all. Users pay from their crypto wallets. Merchants receive fiat through the payment infrastructure they already use. No new integrations or changes on their side. Could that be a more realistic path to everyday crypto adoption or does relying on traditional payment rails defeat the point?
