HODLers

If BTC works on cycles, why are people are so hardcore believers about HODLing? Wouldn’t it be smarter to do something like Benjamin Cowen is talking about : sell some during the predictable downturns invest somewhere else during that time (do prior research ahead of the bear market) and comeback for the bull market? I hear talk a lot about October-ish end of the bear market. Any thoughts ?
