Old (2011) steganography file - original extraction tool no longer works, need help identifying method

Looking for some help/direction on an old file recovery issue.

Back in 2011, someone embedded sensitive data into a video file

(.wmv) using steganography, paired with a custom installer/toolkit

built specifically for extraction. The person who set this up is

no longer reachable, so we can't confirm the exact method or

algorithm they used.

What we have:

- The original installer/toolkit program

- The carrier video file (.wmv)

- The original file's URL, along with a "Modified" string noted

alongside it

- Some reference notes related to the embedded data

The problem:

- The installer no longer runs properly — not sure if it's broken,

or just incompatible with modern systems

- We consulted someone with a cryptography background, but they

felt this is more of a file structure / steganography extraction

issue than pure cryptography

- Without access to the original person who built this, we're

trying to reverse-engineer the process

Questions:

- Is this the kind of thing that typically needs a reverse

engineering / digital forensics specialist rather than a

cryptographer?

- Any recommendations for tools or approaches to analyze an old

(2011-era) custom steganography installer?

- Anyone dealt with something similar before?

Not able to share file specifics publicly for privacy/security

reasons, but happy to discuss further via DM if you have relevant

experience.

Thanks!
