Please help me understand better!

I understand it’s a decentralized form of currency. But why the wallets? “Seed”? Is an app not enough? Explain in simple terms but in detail. Or am I over thinking it? Buy the damn thing and sit on it until the value increases? I’ve done a lot of reading online but it just seems like so many layers??
