The average fee rate for BTC is now 250+ satoshis or ~$0.14+ per byte!
According to mempool.space, fees for BTC are remaining almost constant regardless of transaction priority. The fee rates are:
| High Priority | 258 satoshis/vbyte | ~$0.143/vbyte |
|---|---|---|
| Medium Priority | 252 satoshis/vbyte | ~$0.14/vbyte |
| Low Priority | 240 satoshis/vbyte | ~$0.133/vbyte |
When searching up the recent blocks in mempool.space, average transaction sizes are ~500 vbytes. The average transaction fee is now ~$65.00. Even if we assume some sort of double-digit percentage discount using SegWit, that puts a normal transaction of even $65.00 as the dust-limit. Just for fun, we can approximate the cost of an input for a transaction (so not even being sent) as ~$16.50 at the very minimum, regardless of priority.
This means if I just want to move my money twice, at the absolute minimum, I have to buy ~$35.00 worth of BTC just to have a -100% return if I'm sending my coins to a wallet and back to an exchange, which means I will have 0 coins to sell. According to the Bitcoin Core narrative, on-chain transactions are only meant for transactions of higher value. Even if I want to buy a car, and I have a larger transaction with just 100 inputs, the fee (not even including moving those coins to your wallet to begin with) is going to be >~$2,000, so now it is not even far-fetched for an on-chain transaction being unviable for large purchases.
