Want reliable 1GB blocks on mainnet? Can do. Instructions inside.

As many have said, it's not something that can be done by just changing a number. In the "safe" case, usage is low, it's not tested and we get some slightly empty marketing benefit. But you can't assume the safe case. In the "dangerous" case, usage blows up and the network grinds to a halt as nodes, infrastructure and applications fail to keep up. Or in reality, pools simply refuse to mine really big blocks.

But we should definitely not just sit back and wait for something to happen. The bottlenecks we have seen show the way: Nodes, infrastructure, apps and pools would need to be ready for it. We basically know what needs to be done.

It's not hard to get started on this but it will be a lot of work to carry it to the end. Whoever thinks this is something worth dedicating resources to can create and own a CHIP, become accountable for documenting and addressing all the roadblocks on the way to smooth 1GB blocks. This CHIP is going to be both a lot of work and very rewarding. It may have a few false starts from people who don't realize the weight of the responsibility they would be taking on, but I think eventual success is inevitable.

And please remember, CHIPs are not dev documents. Especially a CHIP of this scale is a multidisciplinary document that requires collaboration of pools, miners, nodes, infrastructure and applications. At a minimum though, it needs an accountable owner with a lot of willpower and good communication.

I think along the way, there will be many marketing opportunities when we are clearly ready for 100MB, 200MB and so on.

Really looking forward to this one. I can recommend a title:

CHIP-2021-03-Ready-For-Gigabyte-Blocks

or maybe start with:

CHIP-2021-03-Ready-For-256MB-Blocks
