We bought pizza with Bitcoin! It wasn't as easy as last year.
While my girlfriend is more into the investment aspects of crypto, I've always been the SPENDL type. What good is an asset if you can't use it? And what better common, every-day use than pizza?!
Not my first time doing Bitcoin Pizza day, so I know the routine. Using Menufy (a restaurant platform which accepts crypto via Bitpay integration), I search for nearby pizza places. Of course, all the local ones are pub food, so for good pizza we have to drive to the burbs. Fine, once a year, no big deal.
Go to pay, they have my wallet of choice (hooray). What's this? They take dogecoin but ETH not supported? This is the most ass-backward thing I've seen in crypto all week! ETH's what I used last year and where I have most liquidity. So I try metamask, it'll take it from there! Great. Wait, what's this gas fee? $100+ in gas fee. Forget that noise!
So, I use a built-in swap integration to change some ETH into BCH. It took a few blocks for it to confirm, so my payment timed out on Bitpay. (At least menufy saved the order details, so you don't have to rebuild the whole order.)
Then I used BCH to buy the pizza. Fee: $0.007 USD - less than 1 cent. I bumped that up to 7 cents to ensure next block, even though zero-conf works fine. Order processed in seconds!
Moral of the story: Even experienced crypto users can have usability issues, and if not careful could have paid a LOT of unnecessary gas. It's good to use it once in a while to keep it fresh. And let's encourage adoption!
Happy Bitcoin Pizza day! (Typed while eating cold pizza for breakfast)
