Why is BCH still on SHA256 mining?

If I understand correctly, being the dominant coin for an ASIC class gives extra protection against 51% attacks compared with being a minority coin for an ASIC class, all else being equal.

Then, why hasn't BCH switched away from SHA256 mining? What are the advantages/disadvantages? Is this a difficult change to implement "mid-air"? Would it be a contentious issue?
