Why is institutional adoption considered so important for Bitcoin’s future?

A lot of recent discussion has been around ETFs and large institutions increasing exposure to Bitcoin.

Why is this viewed as such a major long-term signal for Bitcoin adoption? Is it mainly about legitimacy and trust or does institutional buying have a bigger impact on the ecosystem overall?
